چکیده

Almost two decades have passed since French and American trials evaluated the use of spinal opioids during labor and since European randomized trials compared conventional epidural analgesia with combined spinal epidural (CSE) analgesia. CSE analgesia has gained worldwide acceptance and is becoming increasingly popular for labor pain relief. Obstetric anesthetists are divided when questioned on the place of CSE in labor analgesia. Whilst some authors feel it should be the technique of choice, others reserve CSE for certain indications. Recently, Simmons et al. published a Cochrane review concluding that CSE offers little benefit as compared to conventional epidural analgesia. However, the authors of this metaanalysis did acknowledge that CSE produced faster analgesia, resulted in less need for rescue analgesia and was associated with less urinary retention. Apart from a slight increase in the incidence of pruritus, these beneficial effects were not associated with more complications. The three demonstrated benefits of CSE are sufficient to promotes it’s use if the side-effect profile remains unaltered. Furthermore it must be stressed that this Cochrane review can be criticized. Firstly, a number of well performed studies were excluded from (Rev. Esp. Anestesiol. Reanim. 2009; 56: 546-561) FORMACIÓN CONTINUADA

Update in intracranial pressure evaluation methods and translaminar pressure gradient role in glaucoma.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. Historically, it has been considered an ocular disease primary caused by pathological intraocular pressure (IOP). Recently, researchers have emphasized intracranial pressure (ICP), as translaminar counter pressure against IOP may play a role in glaucoma development and progression. It remains controversial what is the best way to mea...

Bayesian population size estimation using Dirichlet process mixtures.

We introduce a new Bayesian nonparametric method for estimating the size of a closed population from multiple-recapture data. Our method, based on Dirichlet process mixtures, can accommodate complex patterns of heterogeneity of capture, and can transparently modulate its complexity without a separate model selection step. Additionally, it can handle the massively sparse contingency tables gener...

Reliability and Validity Assessment of the Persian Version of the Noise Exposure Questionnaire (NEQ): An NIHL Predictor Tool

Background: Noise and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) are the most prevalent workplace problems. The best way to prevent NIHL is to monitor people's annual noise exposure (ANE) using tools, such as questionnaires. The present study aims to assess reliability of the Persian version of the Noise Exposure Questionnaire (NEQ) and NIHL scores among workers. Materials & Methods: This descriptive s...

Peripheral arterial disease and intermittent claudication: efficacy of short-term upper body strength training, dynamic exercise training, and advice to exercise at home.

OBJECTIVE To compare the effect of two training programmes and advice to exercise at home on physiological adaptations in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). DESIGN 30 patients with a typical history of PAD and intermittent claudication were randomised to either an upper body strength training programme (UBST), a dynamic (walking, cycling, circuit) conventional exercise rehabilit...
